Mira Mesa was originally established as a residential community for the Miramar Naval Air Station in the 1950s.

Community events in Mira Mesa include the weekly Mira Mesa Bike Night (MMBN), which attracts hundreds of bikers.
Other family-friendly events include the Fourth of July parade, the Mira Mesa Street Fair in October, and the Tet Festival, a three-day Vietnamese Lunar New Year festival that over 20,000 people attend each year. The Tet festival is also the longest running Vietnamese Lunar New Year festival in San Diego.
